Lucid Motors is set to launch its second model, the Gravity, a large and luxurious electric SUV that aims to compete with the Rivian R1S and Kia EV9. Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson boldly claims the Gravity will be "the best SUV in the world," a significant statement that raises expectations for this new model.

The journey to realizing this ambitious goal is chronicled in a new video series titled "Road to Gravity." These videos delve into key aspects of the Gravity’s design and manufacturing process as Lucid prepares to start production toward the end of 2024.

The Gravity is positioned as a full-size SUV, rivaling models like the Rivian R1S, Tesla Model X, and Kia EV9. Expected to start at around $80,000, the Gravity will likely feature similar power options to the Air sedan, including a variant with over 1,000 horsepower utilizing the tri-motor setup from the Air Sapphire.

Projected to have an EPA range of up to 440 miles, the Gravity's 900-volt architecture will make it one of the fastest-charging electric SUVs available. It promises high practicality, offering three rows of seats or up to 112 cubic feet of cargo space and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds.

In the "Road to Gravity" series, Lucid emphasizes the Gravity SUV’s strengths and their advanced manufacturing capabilities. To support the Gravity's production, Lucid expanded its Casa Grande, Arizona facility from 850,000 square feet to 3.85 million square feet. The facility now includes a new, advanced production line that can be swiftly retooled for other models as needed.

This expansion increases the plant’s annual production capacity from 34,000 to 90,000 vehicles. In 2023, Lucid produced 8,428 vehicles and delivered just over 6,000. The new line will not only support the Gravity but also the Air sedan and future midsize models, marking a significant step forward in Lucid’s manufacturing capabilities.
